It was probably about twenty-five years ago that I just had to have a canoe. Obviously, at the time I was watching a lot of outdoor adventure programming and knew a canoe was going to be in my life.
At that time the kids were young and we had a Chevy Suburban. Nothing like a Suburban to tie down a canoe on and head for the river! As with every Dad out there, I bought it, I portaged it, I paddled it, and I tied it back on the Suburban to drive home after the canoe got very little use. Huh? I should have known better? Yeah, most likely.
The kids wanted to fish and fishing out of a canoe is a bit tricky. It’s balance thing. The kids caught nothing. The canoe ended up being a nuisance and all fourteen feet six inches of it sits rotting out at the back of our property. Seats, wicker, are rotted and lying beside the canoe. Some animal or other has nibbled the gunwales and the “Old Town” decals have long since gone the way of the Fall leaves of 1997.
It goes to show that impulse buying is expensive, non-fulfilling, and, usually, unnecessary. In other words, what was I thinking?
