Over the Years

Well, we, meaning you and I, are approaching Christmas much to quickly. Some years back I decided that I wasn’t much interested in celebrating Christmas after reading in the Bible, where Jesus stated in reference to this holiday, Do not celebrate my birth, rather, celebrate my death. As Christmas is not the day of Jesus’ birth what are we celebrating on Dec. 25th? The closest event to that date is the winter solstice which was a pagan celebration. Interesting.

To celebrate his birth on a pagan holiday gives some religions pause so they do not celebrate Christmas. As I am one who only reads the Bible, with no religious affiliation, I am rather flummoxed as Christmas used to be my favorite holiday. I have chosen, however, to honor what Jesus stated and stay out of any Christmas celebration.

This is a difficult choice for me as no one understands why I choose not to get my party on at this time of year. Choices we have to make which are against popular dates on the calendar are some of the more difficult decisions so I gift each person on my list throughout the year, but not on Christmas.

My wife has a shiny new computer and monitor as does my daughter. My sons have other gifts from me given through the year and if they are grateful then I have done the right thing. Nobody said that being Christian would be easy did they? Nope, in fact, the Bible states the opposite, being a Christian can leave a person open to all types of harm. Yet, throughout the year there is nothing better than to prepare oneself for eternity and hope that the mistakes we do make can be forgiven. Never think we are in a state of grace as we need to be ever vigilant or this world will take us down. I sleep well with a clear conscience.
